About Us
Dr. Ann Shillingford
Welcome to UnCage!
I am Dr. Shillingford. I am a mother, wife, daughter, sister, counselor, educator, advocate, and so much more. I was born and raised on the beautiful Caribbean island of Dominica (not to be mistaken for the Dominican Republic). I had over 20 years of experience as a counselor and counselor educator. I strongly believe in holistic wellness and enjoy supporting clients on their quest to determine their life’s meaning and purpose, using a wellness approach. Most of all, I want to help you emancipate yourself from mental slavery so that you can live your best life possible. So, let me walk your journey with you through personal exploration and wellness engagement.
Dr. S. Kent Butler
I am Dr. S. Kent Butler and I am a lover of family and I have a heart for social justice service! I am of the firm belief that successful people build each other up. They motivate, inspire, and push each other. It is my conviction that unsuccessful people just hate, blame, and complain. To educate the masses, I also believe that we must meet each person where they are. My goals are not to change people, but to expose and provide pathways to self-knowledge, self-love, and ultimately a desire to change. Allow folks to uncage! I stand firm in the sentiment that “All that is necessary for evil to triumph, is for good people to do nothing,” a quote attributed to Edmund Burke. I am blessed to currently serve as 70th President of the American Counseling Association (ACA).
I am an ACA Fellow and currently host an ACA’s weekly vodcast, “The Voice of Counseling”. Earlier in my career I served as a President for the Association for Multicultural Counseling and Development (AMCD), ACA Governing Council Representative, and an AMCD Multicultural Counseling Competencies Revisions Committee member which produced the Multicultural Social Justice Counseling Competencies (MSJCC). I have also worked on crisis management teams in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina devastated the United States southern region. My experiences on the Motherland in South Africa and Botswana were so powerful that in 2012 I began creating opportunities for students and members of AMCD to provide outreach to South African women affected by violence. My research interests align with Multicultural Counseling and Supervision, Social Justice advocacy, Mentoring, Black Males, and International, Group, & School Counseling.
